Earthquake hits off east coast of Taiwan, near Japans Southwestern Ryukyu Islands.

A 6.4 magnitude earthquake has hit under the sea between Japan and Taiwan, the USGS said.

The 6.4 earthquake hit February 7 2010 just off the Ryukyu Islands, Japan

An Ocean wide tsunami alert was not issued by the Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre in the minutes after the earhquake, felt by people in northern Taiwan and southern Japan.

However reports said some small islands near the Ryukyu quake were told a small tsunami may be experienced.

Prelimenary estimates put the Ryukyu, Japan earthqauke at a depth of around 16 kilomters under the sea floor.

The USGS said the Ryukya, Japan earthquake hit these distances from major population centres in Japana and Taiwan:

115 km (70 miles) SSW of Ishigaki-jima, Ryukyu Islands, Japan
225 km (140 miles) ESE of Hua-lien, Taiwan
225 km (140 miles) ESE of Su-ao, Taiwan
2055 km (1280 miles) SW of TOKYO, Japan
