Rahul Gandhi’s austerity journey came to a dramatic en when the Swarn Shatabdi Express that he was travelling in from New Delhi to Ludhiana was stoned near Panipat.
Fortunately no one was injured in the stone throwing incident on Tuesday night at around 2130 hrs IST as the Amritsar-Delhi Swarn Shatbadi Express arrived in Panipat.
The window panes of three coaches C-2, C-4 and C-7 were damaged and though no one was hurt, the attack created panic and uncertainty. Rahul was travelling in coach C-3.
Rahul Gandhi had made the day-trip to Punjab’s industrial city of Ludhiana to participate in a training camp for Youth Congress leaders. He took the train early from New Delhi station and returned late in the evening.
The Congress MP from Amethi followed his mother and Congress president Sonia Gandhi in travelling economy class. The 38-year-old Congress leader chose to travel by train as part of the party’s austerity drive because of the drought in many parts of the country.
